Planning The Next Round Around The World

Planning The Next Round Around The World

Aug 12, 2017

Last year I really had a great time on my Around The World Birthday Trip. Even though it was only a 7 day trip, flying some of the world’s best first class products was a cool experience. I guess I don’t have to mention that I wanted to fly again as soon as possible.

So this year I will go again only for a little bit longer. The objective is to get flights in premium cabins around the world including the destination Hawaii. Why Hawaii? Simply because I’ve never been there before. This time I will go together with my girlfriend Kasia. That will make it a little harder to get award space in first class but we’ll see..

Of course I can’t and won’t afford paying the retail prices for 2 people in premium cabin around the world so I will book using my miles to get a reasonable pricing. But where to get all these miles?

Go for (Aegean) GOLD!

Go for (Aegean) GOLD!

After I decided to turn my back on Lufthansa’s Miles and More program I joined the Miles+Bonus program from Aegean Airlines last year. While you need 100.000 miles to achieve the Lufthansa Senator status you only need 48.000 miles with Miles+Bonus and 4 flights with Aegean or Olympic Air. Or 72.00 miles without any Aegean flights to get the equivalent status which is Star Alliance gold.

I already completed the 48.000 miles in February and now I’m at Thessaloniki airport in the Aegean lounge waiting for my return flight to Munich to complete my 4th Aegean flight and finally receive my Star Alliance gold status.

I booked these flights a couple of months ago for 80,-€ MUC-SKG; SKG-MUC with 4 hours layover which I spent in the Aegean lounge.

Why is this status so important? – Some people might ask.

Impressions of Avianca Business Class Boeing 787-8 LHR-BOG

Impressions of Avianca Business Class Boeing 787-8 LHR-BOG

Jan 7, 2017

In December I was traveling to South America and had the chance to review Avianca Business Class from London Heathrow to Bogota on a Boeing 787-8. Here are some of my impressions:

The hard product is actually pretty good. Business Class consists of two cabins with flatbed seats laid out in a spacious 1x2x1 configuration. Especially seats 6A and 6K have a lot of personal space because row 6 is the first row of the second part of the Business Class cabin. This “mini cabin” just consists of 2 rows. There are various storage spaces including a small cupboard on the central console as well as an armrest storage space. Under the standard-size television screen is a footrest which also provides additional storage area. The flatbed seat provides enough space to get some sleep on long haul flights. Way better than any angled seat could be.

During our stay in the Bahamas we had planned a day trip to Staniel Cay. That’s a small island 35 flight minutes southeast of Nassau. It is famous for its Pig Beach, home of the swimming pigs. Of course you can also get there by boat but that would have taken much longer so I decided to rather go for the short flight.

The flight was operated by Flamingo Air, a small airline based at Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport. The itinerary showed as follows:

Departure Nassau (NAS) at 08:00AM; arrival Staniel Cay (TYM) at 08:35AM

Departure Staniel Cay (TYM) at 02:50PM; arrival Nassau (NAS) at 03:25PM

The ticket price was 150,-$ round trip per person on flamingoairbah.com. (The boat tour price was 369,-$ per person.)

Atlantis the Cove Resort and Casino Bahamas

Atlantis the Cove Resort and Casino Bahamas

This October I visited the Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island, Bahamas. This place was one of the top resorts on my bucket list. The stay at Atlantis The Cove wasn’t initially planned due to the high room rates there, but after the first visit to the casino at Atlantis and some lucky slot cash outs it became possible. After three nights at the Colonial Hilton in Nassau we checked into a Club Suite at Atlantis The Cove for two nights.

The Atlantis is part of the Autograph Collection and member of Marriott Rewards. Though the Membership Rewards elite level perks do not really apply there. For example even Membership Reward platinum elite members don’t get access to the club at The Cove. I decided to book a Club Suite to get an impression of what The Club has to offer.

Why I like the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Why I like the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Sep 10, 2016

In January 2012 I visited the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas or just “Cosmo” for the first time. The hotel opened in 2010, it is located at the heart of the strip next to the Bellagio.

We had booked a regular room and were upgraded to a wraparound tarrace suite which was really fantastic as we had booked 5 nights. The reason for the upgrade was most probably that we arrived late at 10 PM and apparently they had no more regular rooms available. Even though we had to wait 30 minutes until we finally got the suite, the upgrade was definitely worth the waiting time. Wraparound terrace suites start at 345,-$ per night where the regular room rate was 225,-$.

The stylish hotel with its modern ambience and nice rooms made a good impression at first sight and so I was curious to further explore the location.

Impressions of JFK-FRA in Singapore Airlines Suite Class

Impressions of JFK-FRA in Singapore Airlines Suite Class

The last segment of my around the world birthday trip was the flight from New York JFK to Frankfurt in Singapore Airlines Suite Class. This was also the flight I was most excited about as it wasn’t easy to get the award ticket. I was waitlisted until 2 weeks before departure when the award space finally opened up.

Here are some of my impressions including the ground experience in the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at JFK Airport. I have to say that this was a very interesting ground experience as the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at JFK really offers a great ambience to spend the time waiting for your flight.

Among other things it is the bar, the pool table and the hairdresser that definitely make this lounge special.
